Vaccine doses allocated to 9 African countries hardest hit by mpox surge

November 6, 2024

The Access and Allocation Mechanism (AAM) has allocated 899,000 mpox vaccine doses to nine African countries heavily affected by the current surge. The Democratic Republic of Congo will receive 85% of doses, as it reports 80% of Africa's confirmed cases with over 38,000 suspected cases and 1,000 deaths this year. The allocation, supported by international donors including Canada, EU nations, and the USA, targets countries based on readiness and epidemiological data. While vaccination has begun in DRC and Rwanda, this coordinated deployment represents a significant step in containing the outbreak, with more allocations expected by year-end.
