January 21, 2025
The European Commission, through HERA, has delivered 10,000 doses of the MVA-BN® vaccine to Uganda as part of its coordinated response to the mpox outbreak. This contribution is part of a larger initiative involving over 215,000 doses donated to Africa CDC to combat the crisis across Africa. The delivery aligns with Team Europe’s commitment to global health security, exemplified by previous shipments to the DRC and Rwanda. Laurent Muschel, HERA’s head, and Dr. Jean Kaseya of Africa CDC emphasized the power of international collaboration in protecting vulnerable populations and strengthening preparedness for current and future health threats.
In a critical move to combat the mpox outbreak in Africa, the European Commission’s Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA) delivered 10,000 doses of the MVA-BN® vaccine to Uganda. This donation forms part of a broader effort by Team Europe, which has pledged over 605,000 vaccines to support Africa CDC’s response. Previous contributions include 200,000 doses sent to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and 5,420 doses to Rwanda, reflecting a strategic, continent-wide approach to strengthening health security.
HERA’s commitment builds on the Team Europe model, with additional vaccines from Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Portugal already delivered. Laurent Muschel, HERA’s Head, underscored the importance of solidarity, stating, “We cannot fight these health threats alone. The 10,000 doses will help Uganda tackle this deadly disease.” His remarks highlight the need for coordinated interventions to address global health challenges effectively.
Dr. Jean Kaseya, Africa CDC’s Director-General, applauded the partnership, emphasizing that the vaccines will protect vulnerable populations and aid in containing the outbreak. He noted that this collaboration reflects a shared vision for strengthening health security and resilience across Africa. “Together with the European Commission and Team Europe, we are making significant strides to safeguard vulnerable communities,” Kaseya said.
This vaccine delivery is a testament to the European Commission’s broader mission to enhance preparedness and response capabilities for current and future health emergencies. By fostering partnerships and ensuring swift, coordinated interventions, Team Europe is setting a benchmark for global health collaboration. As Africa continues to grapple with the mpox outbreak, the support from HERA and EU Member States underscores the importance of international solidarity in protecting public health and building a more secure future for all.
