January 1, 2025

Nepal's Health Minister, Pradeep Paudel, has emphasized vigilance to address the growing mpox risk, conducting an on-site inspection at Tribhuvan International Airport. Health desks are monitoring air passengers to prevent further spread of the virus. Two cases involving Nepali citizens returning from Saudi Arabia have been reported; one patient has recovered while the other remains in stable condition under treatment. The Ministry has engaged airlines, immigration, and airport staff in preventive efforts, underscoring its commitment to containment. Timely collaboration and resource support will be key to mitigating mpox risks and protecting Nepal’s public health.

In response to rising mpox concerns, Nepal's Minister for Health and Population, Pradeep Paudel, has highlighted the importance of vigilance at points of entry. During an on-site inspection at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), Minister Paudel engaged with officials to assess and enhance preventive measures against mpox transmission.

Health desks have been established at the airport to monitor incoming passengers, focusing on early detection and containment of potential cases. The Ministry has actively involved airlines, immigration officers, civil aviation personnel, and security staff in its efforts, offering assurances of support to address any challenges they may face.

Currently, Nepal has reported two mpox cases among citizens returning from Saudi Arabia. One patient has fully recovered, while the other, receiving treatment at the Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital, is stable and not in a life-threatening condition.

The proactive measures at TIA reflect Nepal’s broader commitment to mitigating the spread of mpox, a viral disease transmitted through close contact. Symptoms typically include fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes, with severe cases potentially leading to complications such as pneumonia or encephalitis.

Minister Paudel’s approach underscores the importance of collaboration and preparedness in tackling public health risks. The Ministry’s focus on early detection, monitoring, and public engagement is vital for containing mpox and safeguarding the health of Nepali citizens.

As global mpox cases rise, Nepal’s efforts serve as a reminder that proactive and coordinated public health responses are essential to prevent outbreaks. Strengthening health infrastructure and ensuring effective communication between stakeholders will be key to sustaining these preventive measures and minimizing mpox-related risks.
