China discovers cluster of new mpox strain

January 9, 2025

China’s health authorities have detected a new mutated mpox strain, clade Ib, linked to a cluster outbreak originating from a foreigner with travel history to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Four additional cases were identified among close contacts, with symptoms including rashes and blisters. This strain, which spreads more easily through close contact, has prompted global concern after the World Health Organization declared mpox a public health emergency last year. China’s National Health Commission has classified mpox as a Category B infectious disease, empowering officials to implement emergency measures to curb outbreaks and prevent further transmission.

China has reported its first cluster outbreak of the mpox clade Ib strain, a mutated variant linked to global concern following the World Health Organization’s (WHO) declaration of a public health emergency last year. The outbreak began with a foreign national who had traveled and lived in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where the strain originated. Four additional cases have been confirmed among close contacts of the index patient. Symptoms reported include mild skin rashes and blisters, characteristic of the disease.

The clade Ib variant spreads more efficiently through close contact, including sexual interactions, compared to the endemic clade I strain in the DRC. This increased transmissibility has allowed the variant to spread from the DRC to neighboring countries, including Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, and Burundi, prompting the WHO’s emergency declaration in August.

China’s response reflects proactive public health measures. Since August last year, authorities have monitored international arrivals and goods for potential mpox cases. The National Health Commission has also classified mpox as a Category B infectious disease, allowing for emergency interventions such as restricting gatherings, imposing quarantines, and sealing affected areas during outbreaks.

This development underscores the importance of global surveillance and rapid response to emerging infectious diseases. The spread of the clade Ib strain highlights the interconnected risks of global travel and the need for comprehensive public health strategies. Continued vigilance, early detection, and community awareness are vital to containing mpox and mitigating its impact. As the strain spreads to more countries, collaborative efforts at national and international levels will be essential to safeguard public health. China’s swift action serves as a reminder of the urgency required in addressing this evolving threat.
