As mpox vaccine centres open across England, here’s who is eligible for a jab

February 3, 2025

The UK’s mpox vaccination program has expanded nationwide, with 12 new sites providing broader access to high-risk individuals. Previously limited to London, Brighton, and Manchester, the initiative now reaches all regions of England, strengthening defenses against the virus. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) maintains that the risk to the general population remains low, but proactive measures, including securing additional vaccine doses, aim to curb potential outbreaks. Eligible individuals, including men who have sex with men and those in high-risk settings, are encouraged to book appointments through the NHS. This expansion underscores the UK’s commitment to public health preparedness.

In response to the continued presence of mpox in the UK, the government has significantly expanded its vaccination program, adding 12 new sites across England. Previously, vaccinations were only available in London, Brighton, and Manchester, but with new locations in major cities such as Birmingham, Liverpool, and Bristol, the initiative ensures nationwide access to those most vulnerable to infection.

The expansion follows the UK’s first case of the clade 1b mpox strain in October and builds on proactive steps taken in September, when additional vaccine doses were secured. While the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reassures that the overall risk remains low, broadening vaccine access strengthens public health defenses and reduces potential spread.

Mpox, a viral infection transmitted through close physical contact, typically causes fever, swollen lymph nodes, and a painful rash. While most cases are mild, individuals with weakened immune systems, pregnant individuals, and those with underlying health conditions face a higher risk of severe complications, including bacterial infections and, in rare cases, sepsis. Vaccination offers strong protection, with most individuals requiring two doses administered at least one month apart.

Eligibility criteria prioritize men who have sex with men, individuals engaging in group sex, and staff at sex-on-premises venues. Contact tracing efforts will also determine vaccine eligibility for those exposed to confirmed cases.

The newly launched vaccine sites, combined with ongoing education efforts, reflect a robust response aimed at preventing further transmission. Eligible individuals are urged to book appointments via the NHS website to ensure timely protection. This expansion underscores the UK’s commitment to disease prevention and public health preparedness, demonstrating the importance of early intervention in controlling viral outbreaks.
